Before Installation: How to Get Ready
Good preparation makes installation day go smoothly and helps protect your home during the process. Here's what to think about ahead of time.
Decide Who Is Removing the Existing Floor
Your current flooring needs to come out before new tile goes in. You can remove it yourself in advance, or our team can handle it for you. Just make sure this is agreed on before installation day so there are no surprises.
Sort Out Furniture
Decide ahead of time whether you'd like to move furniture yourself or have the installation team assist. Either way, clear out any fragile items, valuables, or anything breakable from the room before the crew arrives. We offer furniture moving and removal assistance if you need it.
Do Other Remodeling First
If you're planning to paint, add trim, or do any other work in the same room, do it before the tile goes down. It's much easier to paint walls or install baseboards before a finished tile floor is in place. Keep a little extra paint on hand as well for touching up any nicks after the installation is complete.
Check Your Door Clearances
Tile adds height to your floor. If you're laying over an existing subfloor, the added thickness of tile and mortar can cause doors to drag or bind. Measure door clearances in advance and plan to have the bottoms trimmed if needed. This is especially common in older Omaha homes where doorframes are already fitted tightly.
Plan Your Tile Layout Direction
In general, rectangular or linear tile runs best parallel to the main window in a room, or along the longest wall in a narrow space. Confirm the Timeline
Talk with our team about how long the project will take from start to finish, including any cure time before the room is back in use. Depending on the size of the job, you may need to plan for a day or two where you're out of the kitchen or bathroom. We'll give you a realistic timeline upfront so you can plan around it.
During Installation: What Our Team Does Step by Step
Here's what the installation process looks like from the moment our crew arrives to the time we hand the room back to you.
Step 1: Subfloor Preparation
This is the most important step, and the one that separates a long-lasting tile installation from one that fails early.
Tile must be installed over a subfloor that is structurally sound, level, rigid, smooth, and clean. Any flex, unevenness, or soft spots in the subfloor will eventually cause tiles to crack or grout to break down.
Depending on what we find, subfloor prep may include:
- Leveling low spots or grinding down high spots
- Securing loose or squeaky boards
- Installing cement backer board to create a stable, moisture-resistant base
- Moisture testing, particularly important in Omaha basements and bathrooms where humidity levels can be high
We never cut corners here. If the subfloor isn't right, we fix it before a single tile goes down.
Step 2: Planning the Layout
Before the first tile is set, our installer maps out the layout for the entire space. This step involves:
- Finding the center point of the room
- Snapping chalk lines to establish straight, even reference lines
- Doing a dry layout to check how tiles will fall at the edges and corners
- Adjusting the starting point to avoid small, awkward cuts at doorways or focal walls

Step 3: Setting the Tile
With the layout confirmed, the installer spreads thinset mortar in manageable sections and begins placing tiles. Spacers are used between each tile to keep the grout lines consistent throughout the floor.

Step 4: Grouting
Once the mortar has cured, typically the following day, grout is applied across the tile surface and worked into the joints. The installer then cleans the tile faces carefully to remove grout haze before it sets.

Step 5: Cleaning and Curing
After grouting is complete, the installer does a thorough clean of the tile surface. The floor then needs time to cure before it can be used.
Plan to stay off the floor for 24 to 48 hours after installation, and avoid heavy furniture or traffic for the first 72 hours. Grout needs time to fully cure before it reaches full hardness and stain resistance.
After Installation: First Steps to Protect Your New Floor
Once the floor is cured and ready for use, a few simple steps will help you get the most out of your investment right from the start.
Seal the grout. Fresh grout is porous and will absorb stains quickly if left unsealed. We recommend applying a penetrating grout sealer within the first week after installation. Touch up paint and trim. Now that the floor is in, it's the right time to reinstall baseboards, touch up paint on the walls, and add any transition strips between rooms.
